THE LATE FLOODS.
A CHARGE OF DRUNKENNESS AGAINST SUFFERERS. A DENIAL FROM NAPIER. [By Telegraph.] (Per Pirss Ax*«riatio^^ Napier, This day. In connection with a telegram from the Mayor of Wellington, enquiring as to the truth of the statement that drunkenness prevailed amongst the sufferers by the Hood, and that the need of assistance was not as great as stated, the Mayor this morning sent the following telegram on the authority of the executive committee :—" Your telegram of last night caused both indignation and sorrow. Indignation at the meanness which prompted so false a statement, and sorrow that the unfortunate sufferers should have been so maligned. You have my authority to give the statement a most emphatic denial. No case of druukenness, with one exception, has occurred, and every credit is due to the publicans of the Hooded district for the assistance given by them in throwing their houses open to the sufferers, and by supplying their wants till aid was sent. Nothing has transposed since my appeal to lead the Executive Committee to believe that any less sum than originally estimated would meet the enormous losses settlers have sustained. Before sending this to the Press I would request you personally to interview the Hon Hall-.Jones and Mr Ronayne, who have had ocular demonstration of the devastation of the country and the distress of the people. No cash has been given any of the sufferers, all relief being bedding, stores and clothing." THE RELIEF FUND. In addition to the £'loo already contributed by him, Mr R. D. D.
