Francis Haves was a candidate for this examination and also passed creditably, and is now attending the High School m Napier.
At the last annual meeting your committee mentioned the fact that the Infant Department was very badly overcrowded, and the work of teaching was being carried on under great difficultly and urged upon the new Committee to keep the mutter in view, and to lose no opportunity to bring the question of more accommodation for these little ones before the Education Board : we now have the pleasure to inform you that we brought the matter before the Board with the happy result of having our request granted, and a sum was placed on the estimates amounting to about J6650, and we now have a very comfortable and handsome building set apart especially for the Infant department to accommodate 200. However, on the day of opening there were no less than 17-5 little ones drafted oft'into the new building, and it is now full and more accommodation in the near future will still be needed.
School I'kizks.—A concert in aid of the Prize - Fund was again organised and hold previous to the summer vacation, which was a grand success and resulted in a handsome- sum. which was judiciously expended in prize s which were' presented to the children by Captain Russell. Chairman of the Committee, as also some very handsome special prizes and medals presented by Messrs Jladdison and Co.. A. McCorkindale, F. Moeliur and several other gentlemen, for which the cordial thanks of your Committee are especially due for the praiseworthy example. Your Committee desire to report that the whole of the school buildings, fences, appliances and grounds are in good state of repair, a large - sum has been expended in erecting an iron fence to divide the school grounds from the master's residence ; also that the manner in which the caretakers do their duty and the general state of cleanliness of the buildings is very satisfactory. Fiibrts have been made to obtain some more land for a recreation ground for the children, but as the funds at the Committee's command are not sufficient to purchase the freehold the negotiations are at present in abeyance, but so important a matter should be kept in view by the incoming Committee for with such an ever increasing number of children it will soon be absolutely necessary to enlarge their playgrounds.
In conclusion your Committee again wish to place on record their appreciation at the continued advancement the school is making under the very able management of the Head Master and his energetic staff, also of the very cordial and harmomus relations existing between the staff and the Committee and in resigning the trust placed in them your Committee desire to express a hope that the new Committee and staff will continue to work harmoniously together and that the School may still continue to prosper.
