Mrs I-\ D. Luckie announces elsewhere that she will be glad to meet ladies at her house for the purpose of making up clothing for the women and children who lost their garments in the recent Hood "While Mr Hall-Jones was being carried aerosa the Waitangi ford on the back of one of the linemen, a wag on the bank of the river cried out: "Be careful Jack, you have a Minister on your back." Jack replied : " It's all right, he's just as safe as if he were a bishop."
The New Zealand Times had the most up-to-date reports of the recent 11.1$. floods of any outside paper in the colony. The report of the wreck of the Zuk-ika was also a good piece of work, and shows that the management of the Wellington morning paper has worked hard to supply its many readers with the sad events of this memorable Easter. A number of civil cases were disposed of this morning at the S.M. Court. Messrs Beilby and M'Leod, J.P's. persided. Jane Donnelly, a young half-caste not unknown in Hastings is again in the clutches of the police at Napier. Two prisoners committed to Napier goal from Waipawa for one month for disorderly behavior arrived by the coach last evening, and were sent on to Napier today. At Napier yesterday J. V. Brown sued the Pollard Company for .£3O, rent of theatre for dates booked but not filled. Judgement was given for the plaintiff with costs. We understand that an appeal will be lodged against the decision of the S.M.
Fred Murfitt, the victim of the shooting accident at Havelock, is progressing as favorably as can be expected. He has been removed to Hastings in order to be more convenient to his medical advisers. Several pellets have been extracted.
A man named John Conrod, arrested at Auckland under the Destitute Persons Act and committed to Danevirke, arrived from Napier to-day. He is located in the local cells until to-morrow.
An Otago paper hears that the Buckeye Harvester Co. intends placing both autocars and motor-cycles on the New Zealand market next seaaon. At an Otago seaside resort the Maoris let their hall to the Salvation Army at two shillings per hour, and managed, by sending one Maori after another to testify, to spin out the time so as to bring in an extra two shillings' worth. A correspondent of the Post suggests that the proposal to send the New Zealand contigent Home for the Jubilee celebrations should be knocked on the head, and that the sum thus saved be devoted to the Ha wise's Bay relief fund. Eev. Mr Soltau and Mrs Soltau, the well-known Evangelists will conduct a Gospel Mission in Hastings during the coming fortnight. He will preach twice in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday and Mrs Soltau will preach in the Wesleyan Church in the forenoon service. Services will be held every evening from Monday to Friday at 7.30 in the Presbyterian Church. Mr Soltau has been invited to Hastings by the combined Wesleyan and Presbyterian Churches. All are cordially invited to the meetings.* At the inquest on the body of young Murphy killed at Woodville on Tuesday, the jury found the following verdict : " That the boy Thomas Murphy came to his death through being accidentally shot with a pea-rifle on the road near his house on Davy's road, Woodville, by George William Horne, and the jury consider that there is no blame attachable to any person." The following rider was added : " That the Government be urged to pass an Act prohibiting any person under the age of 16 years from carrying firearms."
