Gisborne, This day,
The steamer Anglian arrived in port at 9 last night, bringing the crew of the scow Pirate, which was wrecked on Portland Island in a gale on Friday morning. She was owned by MiGeorge Nicbol, of Auckland, and was a new vessel, and was bound from Newcastle to Gisborne.
The captain reports having had a rough voyage, and on Friday, when 50 miles from Capo Farewell, a heavy gale was met, and the vessel shipped heavy seas, doing considerable damage.
The Napier light was sighted on the 14th, and Portland Island light on Thursday at 8 p.m. Shortly afterwards the light disappeared, and they saw no more of it. They were driven about all night by the gale, and eventually ran on the island in a fog. She struck heavily, all hands taking to the rigging.
As they were goiug to leave the vessel, one of the A.B.'s, Karl Berner, a native of Germany, suddenly dropped dead. He was lowered into the boat, and, after an inquest had been held, was buried on the island. It is supposed he died of heart disease. Two others, C. Morberg and G. Watkinson, received serious injuries during the gale, and are now receiving medical aid.
