Agricultural Returns.

[By Telegraph.] (Per Pres.t Assoeiati'in.) Wellington, This Day. The agricultural returns published in the Gazette give 281.608 acres under wheat, 396.807 oats, and 81,818 barley. The wheat is estimated to average 28 bushels to the but owing- to the dry weather from»?<ovembcr to January it is doubtful whether this will be realised. No estimate of yield is given of the others, but the enumerators are collecting the actual threshing returns of a few crops in each riding, and from which an estimate will be made. Under potatoes there is au area of 81,997 acres, and under turnips 408,668. The number of horses in the colony is 288,887, an increase of 11,089; cattle 1,189,067. increase 94.821 ; pigs 209,884, decrease 89,948. The latter is probably caused by the alteration in the time of collecting statistics. Sheep number 19,i08,498, a decrease of 688,111, caused through the severe weather in the winter of 1895.
