The Hastings Town Band intend giving the residents of Ilavelock a treat this evening, when an excellent programme of musical items will be discoursed. Mr ti. 11. Yiekers has been elected secretary of the Hastings Bowling Club, vice Mr E. G. Goldsmith, who has left the district. Mr \Y. Y. Bennett holds his usual weekly auction sale to-morrow afternoon. Mr Dennett also holds an important sale by order of the liegistrar of the Supreme Court. The well-known firm of Henry Williams and Sous are always to the front in the shooting season. With their usual foresight they have laid in a big stock of guns, cartridges, powder, shot, <Ve., in fact every accessory for the destruction of the nimble duck and the \arious other game. A Dunedin Press Association wire this afternoon gives am. on dit that the liquidators of the Colonial Bank intend making an application for an examination of the Hon. G. M'Lean. The Tablet states tlist so far as can be ascertained the Roman Catholic teaching institutions passed in all at recent examinations twenty candidates for matriculation, four for the senior civil service, and fifty-four for the junior civil service. Inspector John Drummond, of the Stock Department, informs the Wairarapa Star that there is an abundance of grass in the Hawke's Bay district just now, and stock is looking well. There is, however, a lot of rust in the grass—more than there has been for years. Die Times says Boslier is quite resigned to his fate. He is allowed everything except grog, which in any case he refuses to take. He was asked on one occasion if he would like a little wine, and he refused and said he never tasted it. He is amenable to discipline in every way. Prince Ranjit Sinhji, the popular cricketer, was the heir to a magnificent estate in India; in fact, a Rajahship worth at least £30,000 a year. But through leaving India and settling in England he is held to have forfeited his right to the same. The sulphur deposits of the North Island of New Zealand (says the Sydney Morning Herald) are finding a profitable market in Sydney. On Saturday, March 22, the bardue Empreza, with a full cargo (820 tons), arrived, and another vessel, the Aiexa, with 600 tons, is to follow. At a meeting of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board attention was drawn to the yearly increase in the charitable aid vote, which had grown from less than £BOOO a few years ago until being now approximately set down at £5600. It was moved that £6OO be taken off the estimates, but the proposition was withdrawn on the chairman pointing out that the estimate was only an approximate one, and that every endeavor would be made to keep the item down. The affidavit of the official liquidator of the Ward Association, supporting the application for power to make a call, is set forth in a schedule showing the total claims against the association and assets to meet these as follows :—Claims allowed £82,069 6s 7d, estimated cost of liquidation £2500, claims not yet adjudicated upon £62,461 15s 4d; the assets are — Cash in hand £"24,746 8s 6d, value of stock and plant estimated to realise £I9OO. book debts estimated to yield £20,000, batik balance trust account £4987 .'is sd. do special account £8599 15s 2d. estimated value of call at £4 per share £8450, total £68.683 8s Id.
