A meeting of the Hastings Bowling Club takes place this evening. Every opportunity to excursionistsbv rail is given during the Easter holidays and doubtless many will avail themselves of the chance. The Hastings Band contributed several selections in the mam street on Saturday night. The members are to be complimented upon their marked improvement during the past few months. We draw attention to the replace advertisement of Messrs Kirkealdie and Stains, Napier, in which will be found a full list of the latest additions to their winter stock of ladies' goods, &c., all of the latest patterns and styles.

At the S.M. Court this morning, before Mr G. Ellis, J.P., the lad Claude Paget was charged with having broken into the house of Mr H. Scliaeffer and stolen therefrom a watch and chain valued at £8 los. The case was adjourned till Thursday next. A good football practice match was played on Saturday at Haveloek, there being 17 players on each side. Teams were picked by Messrs Stubbs and Caulton and the game resulted in a draw, each side scoring a try. There were a number of first-class players present who showed plenty dash and full knowledge of the rules. The next match will be played at Hastings on a ground to be decided by a meeting to be held on "Wednesday night. Mr Henry Lawson, the well-known Australian writer and poet, is back in New Zealand, and has made up his mind to remain. He says he prefers New Zealand to any of the colonics. When in New Zealand last Henry Lawson was engaged on the Pahiatua Herald, and in that paper many of his poems appeared for the first time. Mr C. l'\ Lys, the well-known tailor, lias advanced with Hastings. Established in the days when the town was by no means the size it is at present, Mr Lys has been with it through its lips and downs. His shop in Heretaunga road is a model of neatness, and is now stocked with a very line selection of seasonable tweeds, suitings, and everything pertaining to a thoroughly up-to-date tailoring establishment. As a cutter and finisher he is renowned throughout Hawke's l>ay, and gentlemen who have not yet given him a trial should inspect his large and varied stock. There is one thing about the establishment that speaks of the high quality of the work turned out —Mr Lys gives such satisfaction that the only customers he loses are those who leave the district altogether.

The Presbyterian Church was really well attended at -i p.m. yesterday to participate in the (itiehc service held by the Rev. -James McColl. The sons of Caledonia who understood the language, and some who did not, coming from long distances.
