A case interesting to Friendly Societies commenced at the Tiinaru Magistrate's Court yesterday. Some years ago the Friendly Societies in Timaru combined to establish a dispensary, putting in a capital of 15s per member and pay an annual levy per member for carrying on the institution. At first this levy was 6s per year but this proved insufficient ; and in 1880 it was made 10s, and in subsequent years 9s. Last June the Druid Society withdrew and was repaid the balance of its capital advances, nothing being said of any other claim. In September (8 months after retirement) a claim was made for the first time for a share ; of the accumulated profits, which, according to the June balance-sheet were shown in excess of assets over liabilities to be £765, the Druids claiming .£l4l las their share. The plaintiffs' chief witness said these profits accumulated through excessive quarterly levies. Plaintiffs' case was concluded, and counsel for the defendant Dispensary Board moved for the nonsuit on various grounds. The case was then adjourned for a week for reply.
