The Mariposa has sailed for Sydney via Auckland, and has Butler on board. After confessing that he killed Preston he made a turther statement to the effect that when he saw what he had done he became very frightened and concealed the body because he had no witnesses to prove that the deed was done in self-defance. In reference to Captain Lee Weller Butler states that the latter committed suicide through grief at the death of Mrs Weller. Bitller wish off' to notify the Government of the suicide, but the other members of the prospecting party demurred, averring that they might be detained as witnesses in the case.
