The Late Sir John Thurston.

Of the late Governor of Fiji the Sydney Daily Telegraph says : —To give in full the story of Sir John Thurston's masterly administration whilst holding his high and responsible position would be to describe the growth of British influence and power in the abounding islands of the Western Pacific. His name is revered everywhere, because of his great love of justice and the impartial manner in which he dealt with all questions submitted for his decision. He has left his mark on island history. He succeeded beyond the most sanguine expectations in holding the scales of justice between missionary and trader, beachcomber and blackrider, native raider and dative victim, with absolute impartiality. Throughout his career he was beset with great responsibility and great difficulties. He was equal to them all. Whilst in England in 1895 in search of health, Sir John Thurston had an opportunity of conferring with both Conservative and Liberal leaders as to his Pacific policy. They all cordially agreed with it, and, when he returned to Sydnsy, he said m an interview that politically he was stronger than ever. That was so. But physically he was just the reverse. The English trip had only partially restored him. Hard work and bad climatic conditions told upon him again. He came to Sydney, and stayed quietly with some friends. Then he went back to Fiji, and plunged again into the harassing work which his important post involved. But the old trouble was upon him, and it became necessary that he should seek a cooler climate, and special medical advice. Sir John was on his way to do this when the end came."
