Before the Transvaal Inquiry Committee Dr Jameson gave evidence that he did not receive instructions to move on to the Rand ; he acted on his own judgment, and never doubted the success of the undertaking. He personally ordered Maxim guns and ammunition. He frequently talked with Lord Rosmead but did not inform him of his intention, knowing that i£ he succeeded he would be forgiven.
