James Corrigan. of Cabbage Bay, for whom Sir William Wasteneys appeared, was fined £lO and costs £4 6s. At the Auckland Police Court yesterday Arthur E. James, charged with having on August 80th, 1895, deserted his two children, Geraldine and William Arthur, at Hobart,was remanded till the 81st instant. John Giles, charged with deserting his wife and live children at Winton (Southland), was remanded to Winton. At the licensing committee election at Auckland yesterday there was very little interest taken, only 1000 being 'polled. The moderate ticket was elected. At Palmerston the Prohibition candidates were badly beaten. The Wellington Suburbs election resulted in a decided victory for the temperance candidates. The rival claims of Messrs Wilson and Kirk, the two Government candidates for the Wellington Suburbs seat, have been referred to an Arbitration Board of four members, with Mr Quick, chairman of the Counciliation Board, as umpire. Mr Kirk is mentioned as being likely to command the shooting team for Bisley, in which case the difficulty will be got over. The National Council of Women opened its annual session at Christchurch yesterday, delegates being present from nearly all parts of the colony. The president in her address dealt with a number of questions interesting to those present, and dwelt on legislation, past and future, affecting women. She urged the repeal of the C. D. Act, and asked the Council to declare hostility to the liquor trade.
