The heaviest fall of rain there has been at Awanui for thirty years fell between 1 and 3 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. A meeting of holders of allotments in the Hastings cemetery was held at the Borough Chambers last evening, Mr C. A. Fitzßoy, Mayor, in the chair. The following gentlemen were appointed trustees for the coming year: —-Tames Adamson, John Cullen, C. A. Fitzßoy, George Land, Jos. Siddle, J. W. Williams, and J. C'ollinge. The Collector of Customs at Auckland has received £3 as " conscience money " for Customs duties unwittingly evaded. Four hundred and fifty old age pension claims have allready been received at Christchurch. They are still coming in freely. Twenty-one Maoris from the Wairarapa will come to Wellington to train as part of the contingent to accompany the military squad to England. As an indication of the revival of the woollen industry, it may be mentioned that the Wellington Woollen Mills are working 14 hours a day at the present time.

Victoria will be a borrower in the London market next nonth to the extent of £2,900,000. The money is required for redemption and conversion of an equivalent amount of stock. A new company lias been formed with e ilarged capital to take over and work the N Z Times from the present company subject to the consent of the latter's shareholders. So many thefts of bicycles have occurred lately, not only from streets but from the interior of buildings, in Wellington, that it is believed an origanised gang are at work who systematically ship the machines away. A young man named Frank Ashman took an overdose of laudanum at a friend's house at the Thames on Sunday night. He had to be taken to the Hospital before a recovery could be brought about. A man named P. E. Holiepa was charged at the Auckland Police Court yesterday with having committed a breach of the railway regulations by gambling on a train. Defendant said he was induced to play with Europeans and lost £O. Mr Brabant convicted and fined defendant Is without costs. Captain Simpson, of the Aberdeen White Star Line steamer Thermopylae, for the first time in his 32 years' experience of sea life, had the pleasure of spending last Christmas and New Year's holidays with his family at Home, and at the same time celebrated his 50th voyage to Australia and back. There is likely to be an embroglio over the Wellington Suburbs licensing election, as the ballot papers are not printed in alphabetical sequence. The temperance party claim that this will specially affect them as they have issued tickets properly printed and the effect will be misleading. A protest was sent to the returning officer but he is alleged to have taken no notice of it and legal proceedings are threatened. Mr J. Duthie, ex-M.H.R. for Wellington City, addressed a public meeting tit Wanganui last night on the leading political questions of the day. He strongly criticised the present Government, whom he said were neither Liberals nor Socialists, but merely Opportunists. He ridiculed Mr M'Ken/ie's land policy witli its 10 different tenures and cumbersome administrations. He strongly condemned the bankinglegislation, touched on the-co-oper-ative works system, which he dubbed as a failure, and went at some length into the affairs of the J. G. Ward Company. He spoke for two hours, and received a hearty vote of thanks.
