Miscellaneous extract matter appears on our fourth page. Mr H. P. Cohen will hold an important sale of racehorses at Stortford Lodge at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon. Messrs G. H. Vickers and Co. hold an auction sale of horses and cattle at Tattersail's at 11.30 a.m. to-morrow ; and will sell household furniture and sundries at their rooms at 3 in the afternoon. Nelson Bros, have received the following cable from their London office : —'' No improvement in prices of frozen meat market. To-day's quotations—best Canterbury 3d, Dunedin 2J, Napier and North Island 2gd." At the Napier Borough Council last night a communication was received from the traffic manager stating that the Minister for Railways was not prepared to run a Sunday service between Hastings and Napier. The Chairoscurama continues to do good business, and the change of views last evening was the means of attracting a much larger crowd than usual. As this exhibition will remain only a few days longer those who have not seen it should take an early opportunity of doing so. The attendance at Probasco s circus was quite equal to that of the two previous nights, while the performance, if anything, was an improvement on its predecessors. Mr Probasco has a good show, and will, no doubt, continue to draw good houses. The circus is to appear at Olive this evening. The High School and Heretuaunga School played a return match on the Napier Recreation Ground yesterday, the Napier boys again proved victorious. Scores : Napier High School, 79 (Goulding 34, Bishop 22); Heretaunga, 44 (Dodgslnm 24, White 11). Cornford and Clarke for Naper and Potts and White for Heretaunga were the most successful bowlers. The Ada Delroy Company concluded their season at the Princess Theatre last evening. There was a good house, and the entertainment was quite up to previous performances. Mr Bell, as usual, kept the audience in ripples of laughter with his various sketches, while the dancing of Miss Ada Delroy was all that could be desired. The White Mahatma fairly astounded the audience with the wonderful accuracy of her second-sight reading. The other members of the company acquitted themselves with much credit, and deserved the good business and hearty reception they have received in Hastings. At the Wanganui Cycling sports yesterdav, H. Symonds, of Hastings, won the one mile maiden roadster event- and was second in the open half mile race ; while J. M'DoWell got into third place in the one-milo heat of the Grand Handicap. Both riders had the misfortune to get upset in the three-mile heat of the same race, hut escaped with a good shaking; while Lisle, of Wellington, received a nasty cut on the temple. North Canterbury cricketers defeated South Canterbury yesterday by an timings and Hi runs. A kitchen maid is advertised for. It is anticipated that the contribution of Napier to the Indian Famine Relief Fund will amount to £3OO, and Hastings £SO. Attention is drawn to the sale of horses by Messrs Williams and Kettle to be held at Beecroft's stables to-morrow at 11 a.m. Entries will be received up to the time of sale. Detective Chrystal stated in Court to-day that in all his experience he had never seen so few objectionable persons on a course as were at the Hastings races on Wednesday and Thursday. A Danevirke cyclist, Mr A. Henderson, met with a severe accident on Sunday last, having his right arm broken in two places, while his left arm was dislocated at the elbow. In consequence of the general dissatisfaction that has been expressed with the colonial-made ammunition, the Premier said the Government would take steps to remedy the defects. While two men named Marshall and Broome were sleeping in their hut at Seddonville last Tuesday night, a tree came down and crushed through the building at the opposite end to where they were sleeping. Speaking at the banquet to Mr O'Meara, the Hon Mr Hall-Jones said the department intended to open the railway to Pahiatua on June 1, to Mangatainoko on July 1, and to Woodville as soon as the Ngawapurna bridge was repaired. The case of the aged Maoris who are said to be living at Levin in extreme destitution has been brought under the notice of the Premier, who with the humanitarian feeling that is one of his characteristics, has given directions that an officer shall at once enquire into the matter, and give any relief that may be urgently necessary. The annual report of the Wellington - Maiiawatu Railway Company shows that the receipts for the year ending 28th February, 1897, were £126,167, including a balance brought forward of £9659 and the expenditure £106,599, leaving a credit balance of £19,568. The gross earnings of the railway were £94,862, being nearly £2OOO more than last year. Land was sold during the year to the value of £13,766. The directors recommend payment of a dividend of 6 per cent on the paid-up capital. At the Auckland criminal sittings yesterday the second trial of the man Carroll, for throwing acid on Jewell, was concluded. After deliberating two hours, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Justice Connolly : " Very well; then the prisoner is discharged." Then ensued an outburst of popular feeling, such as cheering, stamping of feet, and other demonstrations of approval of the verdict, some women joining in the same. His Honor said the scene was the most disgraceful he had ever witnessed, and he had a good mind to have the doors locked and the assemblage detained to make an example of some of them. The local office of the Union Steamship Company are advised from head quarters that the matters in dispute between the Dunedin branch of the Federated Seaman's Union and the company have been finally settled. It appears that the differences between the Wellington branch of the Seamen's Union and the local shipowners will not be cleared away so easily, and the failure of the parties to come to terms, even after a conference had been arranged on the basis of a compromise, indicates that the Court of Arbitration will have to decide the difficulty.
