The monthly meeting of the Borough Council takes place this evening. Good grazing paddocks within easy distance of town are advertised. A miner named George Clark had a miraculous escape in the Punga Flat (Thames district). He was riding to his work when his horse slipped into an old shaft that was covered over with debris. Clark managed to grasp the shaft, but the horse broke its neck and fell to the bottom of the shaft, a depth of 180 ft. If Clark had missed his hold it would have been almost certain death. In a letter to the General Manager of the Railways, the Hon. Mr Cadman, Minister in charge of the Department, stated that he watched with interest the manner in which the traffic was conducted during the recent Christmas and New Year holidays, and he desired to express his pleasure at the almost entire freedom from accidents, and the able manner in which the business has been earned on under what may be termed extraordinary pressure.
