Ar CKI.ANU, This 'l iy. The Univer-ity Senate iv-am. il today. Dr. Sninchent, Professor Gihoy, and Mrs E. 11. Gro<sman were appointed examiners for tbe McMillanBrown Memorial prize to be arranged for lb!)9. On tbe motion 'of Professor Cook the Senate resolved that <i«-rman bean alternative for physics in the bachelor of music examination. It was resolved to record \Y. F. Patterson as having passed in chemistry and physics in the intermediate medical examination. In the report of the Supervisor's Committee, it was stated the committee had heard rumors that the practice of "■cribbing" or "copying"' at examinations was prevalent throughout the colony, but no evidence was adduced to bear out th's statement. Tbe financial committee reported on the income and expenditure for 1896, both of which exceeded the estimates for last year. The income totalled £'.<7os. and the expenditure £5141, the surplus being £2-">7. The excess in inco:.ie was entirely due to the increase in the receipts from fees, and was evidence of the increasing scope of the University's operations. For the current year the income is estimated at £"->7OO. and the expenditure £5600. The accumulated capital of scholarships account is £12,->7(>. The finance committee recommended the senate to offer for competition this year 14 junior scholarships each of £"3O a year, tenable for three years, with an addition of £2O per year for each of those bolder? of scholarships who are obliged to live away from home to attend the University College. The report was adopted.
