The Acid Throwing Case.
CARROLL COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. [BY TKl.eohaph.] (ftT <x Axaiii .) Aucki.aM', This day. The charge again-! Thomas Carroll of having thrown acid at Robert Jewell, at Pareroa, on January 27. came on at the Police Court to-day. The Crown Prosecutor said accused was a chemist, whose business was at j Bourke or Sydney. He was there acquainted with Miss Alice Lake, and was apparently desirous of marrying i her. The girl" came to Auckland with i the intention of living with her parents, and was determined not to renew the acquaintance of the prisoner. Sinalso made the acquaintance of Jewel 1, and it had he;-n arranged they should j be married. Tlk- accu.-ed arrived from Sydney on Feb. lKth, and had an interview with Miss Lake. She told him plainly she would have nothing to do with him and that she had formed other attachments. He told her if she persisted in marrying Jewell he would make things very uncomfortable for him. Miss Lake and Jewell then proceeded to Pareroa. The acctued followed and became very violent and both men got into an argument. Jewell offered to fight it out, but Carroll refused. Jewell suggested they should go and ask the girl which of them she would have. They went to Miss Lake, v. ho told act-used -he would have nothing to do with him. Carroll shortly afterwards came into the room where Jewell and Miss Lake were sitting, and pulled out a bottle and threw the contents on Jewell, a portion of the acid going on hi> forehead. Jewell suffered great pain, and was disfigured for life. The accused then burst out crying and said he was very sorry. Evidence in support of the Crown's statement wa.-j given by Robert .fewell and Alice Jewell. ><• • Miss Lake. The accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial.
