In the House of Commons Mr Chamberlain announced that a message had been received from the Government claiming the sum of_ £677,988 for material damage result ing from the Jameson Raid, and e million in respect to damage to thi country on moral and intellectual grounds. He stated the wording o the communication was ambiguous—possibly the total amount claimed was a million but he tho.ight this.was not so.

The announcement was received with laughter. The newspapers ridicule the claim.
