Blenheim, Feb. 12
The steamer Neptune, 44 tons burthen, trading bet-weed Wellington and Blenheim, came to grief to-day at the bar of the river leading to Blenheim. The steamer attempted to cross the bar about midday, and striking on the bottom, was washed down the beach for a distance of about half a mile, bumping heavily all the way. Four passengers on board got ashore bv means of a line.
There was a heavy sea, and it is expected the vessel will go to pieces. She carried a full cargo.
There was no insurances on the steamer, which is owned by a syndicate.
Wellington, This day
The Neptune was engaged many years in running to Blenheim. It was built in Auckland in 1883 and its tonnage was 04. Until a week ago Captain Ereford, one of the owners commanded her, but is now in Wellington superintending the construction of a new steamer.
