THE MURDERER BUTLER.
ADMITS USING A NUMBER OF ALIASES. ASTOUNDED AT BEING ACCUSED OF PRESTON'S MURDER. ( I'. r L'rrss Ass,„ idt inn . <n r;l ,i>jht.) San Francisco, Feb. 10. Butler has admitted that he went under the name of Richard Ashe. He declared Harwood was living in London to-day, but he did not intend to tell why he assumed Harwood's name and a dozen other «//<'*<*, some of which he had forgotten. Early in 1h!)(5 he went to Africa, afterwards he returned to Australia. He said " 1 can prove I was not in Australia when some of the murders charged to me were committed." He said his family lived near Hull, but refused to say where. Butler was completely stunned on being accused of the murder of Preston. A new-paper containing the details of this murder was produced, and accused was astounded. Constable Conroy explained how direct evidence was obtained of Weller and Butler having gone to the mountains together unaccompanied by a third person. Ella Butler, of Napa, who claimed the accused as her husband, now admits her mistake.
