A Barque in Distress.
FALLS IN WITH TIIE RECENT GALE. [By Telkokaph." Aij ki.a.vi', This day. The American barque Sea King, bound from Sydney to San Francisco with coal, was towed into port early this morning in a disabled condition. It fell in with the recent gale last Friday in latitude 10 south, and longtitude 177" I ea-t, blowing from the north-oast, gradually increasing to a perfect hurricane, with very heavy rain. On Saturday afternoon it blew very bard from the south-west, the wind beading the vessel oil" the way and backing her into the heavy isea. Great quantities of water broke overboard, and during the night the b- .ivy •< increased, "the barque -training violently. It was then discovered that she was leaking, and lh. c ~b- ing unable to man the pump- d< i keyengine was attached and + i '.wo clays. In all probability 1 \ ' uld otherwise have foundered. Tho gale moderated on Sunday, when it was found that both fore and main masts v. .re sprung and the rudder damaged. The captain deeidt d to make for Auckland.
