Mr Fane, who is a heavy looser, had barely tun to save his wile and family. No particulars are to hand. 51 r -F 8. lieid's patent wire M inder was on exhibition to-day oil the race course and attracted considerable attention. The aparatus, which is very simple and can be easilv worked by a boy of ordinary intelligence.' will prove a boom to runholders and others interested in wire fencing. 51 iles of wire may. with slr lieid'spaleiti, be coiled in a very short time. Altogether the idea is a lirst-elass one, and well worthy of wide u-e. The following official document received bv the I\ev. John Ilosking speaks for itself:—"New Zealand Government Hailways. The rumor, howevt-r, lacks confirmation, and no word has been received from the Press Association on the matter. The concert held last night in aid of the funds of the local 1.0.G.T.. in St. Matthew's Hall can scarcely be characterised as a success. The management was exceedingly bad and the programme was jumbled from one end to the other. A blindfold trapeze performance by Mr Y. Peddie was a very clever exhibition, and certainly a departure from the usual routine of concert halF. Vocal and instrumental items and recitations were contributed by several local amateurs and the children of the juveriilc templars. l)r Hosking presided. Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stains, who have taken over Messrs Neill and Close's drapery business in Napier, announce a 12days' sale of silks, satins, ladies' and gentlemen's underclothing, cashmeres, hosiery, men's suits, moleskins, carpets, linoleums, rugs, mats. &c-, at the most startling reductions. A reference to this enterprising firm's advertisement will show what a really genuine sale this is, and how tliorouglfly in earnest they are. as they publish the prices of each lot in plain figures, showing the goods reduced to under the landed cost price. In the hurry and confusion attending the taking over of such a large stock, a great many articles have been overlooked, and the result is, that as the goods are being gradually sorted, a great many new and useful lines are turning up which are not advertised, and purchasers are delighted by the illimitable variety of startling bargains which is submitted for their inspection. Every one who wishes to economist; should visit the sale. Sergeant Mitchell who has been in charge of the local police station for the past 3 years is under orders to proceed to Wellington on promotion, where lie takes up his duties in charge of a section next week. During the time Sergeant Mitchell has been amongst us he has earned for himself the respect of the entire community by the fearless and impartial manner in which he lias discharged his duty. Sergeant Mitchell's successor whoever he may be will find the district in perfect working order and that a proper knowledge and respect for the laws of the land and the local laws have been thoroughly instilled. As an official Sergeant Mitchell was courteous and polite to a degree, and ail whose business brought them in contact with him exceedingly regret his departure from amongst us. It is the intention of the prominent citizens to present him with an illuminated address as a mark of the esteem in which he is held. While he was crossing the Duller liiver in the chair at Sulliven.s, near Fern Flat, one of the travelling pulleys broke away, and the chair hung in the centre of the wire rope, about 4~>ft above the river. There was no assistance at hand, and Mr Jecklin. growing weary of waiting, succeeded in reaching the river bank safely by travelling hand over hand on the rope. At the closing ot the Wellington Exhibition yesterday the President said in the eleven weeks the exhibition had been open about 1SO.0W) persons had arunded. and he anticipated when the buildings were sold there would be a surplus of nearly A"2">0O. He presented l.ady Glasgow with a silver key as a memento of the closing ceremony, and Lord Glasgow, on hehalt of the committee, presented Mr Brown with a liand-oine tea servi e£ Mr Drown expre-st-d tile opinion that small esisih; ■ tions -neh as that just closing were of far greater benefit to the colony than larg. r one-.
