The s.s. Manaia recently wrecked at Opunake, is fast going to pieces. This morning at the Police Court Constable Butler charged a man named Edward Jackson with grossly indecent behaviour in Heretaunga street yesterday and with indecent language. Accused was convicted and sentenced to a month's imprisonment on each charge. Science says that it took two millions of years to evolve a man from the oyster. Observation shows that it takes considerably less to transfer the oyster to a man. On Saturday afternoon, at Rangiora, a young woman named Cryssel, while engaged in cleaning an upstairs window, slipped and fell through a glss verandah to the pavement, sustaining serious injuries. The Pahiatua Herald says :—" A number of local sports journeyed to the Danevirke races on Wednesday, each with a number of ' dead birds.' They will return in the evening with the feathers." Not bad ! Patrick Leith Ritchie, convicted at Dunedin of entering at the Customs nine bales of wrapping paper as cartridge paper, with a view to evading the duty, was lined £IOO, to be reduced to £26 and costs, while the paper, valued at £6O, will be confiscated. At the Dunedin Police Court yesterday an liotelkeaper was charged with allowing a barmaid to work after 11 o'clock, viz., until 1.50 nest morning. For the defence it was contended that the prohibition against employing a barmaid in a bar could only apply to one day of 24 hours, and therefore the prohibition came to an end at 12 o'clock. The case was adjourned to enable the Magistrate to consider the point. Mr lioberfc Chapman, accountant to the inspector of the Bank of New South Wales, Wellington, died suddenly yesterday afternoon. He was at the Exhibition on the previous night, and apparently well, but this morning suffered a severe attack of peritonitis, and despite .all medical skill succumbed. Deceased, whose friends reside in Dunedin, was 37 years old, a bachelor, and much respected. The annual report of the Wellington Harbor Board was presented yesterday, and revealed a very satisfactory increase during the year. The inward tonnage showed an increase of 10 per cent, and the outward 10; per cent., and their was a clear profit of .£3043 on the working of the port. The total assets are estimated at £341,813, and liabilities at £201,171. The chairman, in referring to the report, said the work of the port was increasing to such an extent that they would shortly have to increase not only the wharfage accommodation, but also that for wool and other goods. The process of dehorning cattle is strongly advocated by many practical men. It is especially recommended for milking cows. We learn that Mr J. Donald, ot Featlierston, who has a private factory, recently had the whole of his herd of milking cows, comprising over 400 head, distributed over four farms, dehorned, with most satisfactory results. The output of milk was reduced a few gallons for a day or two after the operation. The experiment was attended with every success as it is found the cattle are quieter, require less room in the yards, and feed closer in the paddocks.
We (Manawatu Times') regret to have to record the fact that Mr J. 1 Slack died at the Hospital last night. It will be remembered that the deceased, in trying to stop a runaway lior.se, near the Courthouse on polling day, was knocked down. As the result of the accident, amputation of the leg was necessary. The patient progressed fairly for some time, but then took a turn for the worse, and died as stated. The late Mr Black came to Palmcrston about five years ago, and shortly afterwards built the well-known Cafe de Paris Hotel. He had prevously been a railway contractor in the South Jsiiiud, and among other works erected the Wingatui Viaduct in Otago. After leaving the South Island Mr Black had a contract on the Napier breakwater, and during his residency in that town he married. lie was a quiet unassuming man, cordially liked by his friends, and his death in the prime of life, and under such distressing circumstances, is greatly to he deplored. lie leaves a wife and two children.
Mr David Maerea, of Dundee, has brought together sonic amusing " Jilimders " in a little book just issued by Moi ison Brothers, of Glasgow. Mistakes by foreigners speaking our language are often funny. l'astor John J lost, of Laforce, in travelling through Scotland, had heard the word " barren " applied to hill tops where tli(:ro was no vegetation. Accordingly, 011 rising toaddi'css the h'ree < 'hurch Assembly in which thei'c happened to be an unusual number of bald-headed divines, he told them how nervous he was when he looked round ami saw so many barren heads ! The Scotsman remarked ne\t day that for once the l-Yec Assembly had «ol the truth (old about it. Another story relates loan lvlmbui'eh bailie, whose study in natural history seemed lo hape been limited. The following case came before him one day : - A man who kept a ferret, having lo go into the country, left the cafje with the ferret in charge of a neighbor till he should return. The neighbor incautiously opened tilt; cage door, and the ferret escaped. The man was very angry, and brought a claim against him for damages. Tht: following was the decision of the learned bailie: - " Na doot," lie said to the neighbor, " 11a doot ye was wrung to mien the cage door;" but he added, turning to the owner, " ye was wrang too. Trout are very scai'ce in the Lakes district this season, and hardly any have been caught in Wakatipu of late. Sandow, the strong man, overstrained himself in London the other day, whilst raising a horse above his head and lowering it steadily. The record egg-laying duck lip Taranaki wfty lias now deposited 170 eggs, with a break of only one day after laying the 71st egg. Miss Drewett, of Omapere, who was thrown from her horse and dragged for some distance on the 24th instant, died from the injuries received yesterday. Under the Tobacco Act Amendment Act. 1896, which comes into force next Monday all tobacconists who use a cutting machine or make cigarettes by hand required to be licensed. Tobacconists should make a note of this. Gawler & Co., of Koseneath,, have secured the contract for cleaning the windows in the Government House and the whole of the Government offices in Wellington for the next 12 months. The amount of the tender is about £l6O. The intercolonial cricket match, New South Wales v. Victoria, resulted in a win for the former by 198. New South Wales lias an unbroken record this season, and the mother colony should capture the Sheffield Shield this year. The body of a male child a few* days old was found yesterday in a paper parcel floating off Firth's wharf, Auckland. At an inquest on the remains the jury found that the child had been born alive, but that there was no evidence to show how it came by its death. While Mrs Roche, who threw herself over the Waiobine bridge yesterday, was being examined in the Greytown dispensary as to her sanity, she seized a bottle of opium and drank a large quantity of the drug. She has been pronounced insane, and will be sent to an asylum. We are officially assured that the traffic on the New Zealand Railways lias been so satisfactory of late that the receipts for the past nine months total about .£BO,OOO more than the amount received for the same period of the last financial y ear. The expenditure has, of course, increased but not, we are informed, in the same ratio as the receipts. The work of heeling over the sunken barque Coromandel has progressd favourable but slowly in the past few weeks. On Tuesday, however, the mainmast carried away, causing a suspension of operations for a short time. Those who are directing the woi'k do not intend to proceed any further in the present attempt to heel her over, but will, instead, take means to tighten the decks and pump the water out.
The story that Mr Fish will not be able to take his seat in the House of Representatives on account of his throat being seriously affected having got into the newspapers, we (Duncdin Star) made inquiry, andean state that the tale is without foundation. Mr Fish s throat is certainly a source of trouble, but he has no fear of being compelled to vacate his place in Parliament.
Mr R. M'Nab, late member for Ma-t-aura, has left the colony on his nine months' tour, during which be will visit Australia, Japan, India, several European countries, Great Britain, and the United States, returning by the l'acilic line to Auckland.
