There was great excitement in the city yesterday afternoon when it leaked out that 5,000 sovereigns had been stolen from the strong room of the R. 51.5. Oceania, which \v:is ready to sail for Home. It appear- that 011 Friday £290.000 was stowed in the strong room, and yes#frtlay au additional £;3H,000 was brought aboard. It was then discovered that the door of the strong room had been broken open and a box containing "».000 , sovereigns, shipped at Sydney, was missing. The box contained live smaller boxes of 1,000 each, and had been broken open to allow the easy removal of these smaller boxes. The steamer has been detained, but there Ls no clue.
