A Chinaman seeks employment as a gardener, cook, milker, &c. The repjrt that a gold-bearing reef had been found near Gisborne has, says the Telephone, not been substantiated. A six-year-old son of Mr Kelly, hotelkeeper, Paeroa, had a narrow escape from being poisoned yesterday. He was given a dose from a liniment bottle in mistake. A Hindoo was committed for trial at New Plymouth on Thursday on a charge of criminally assaulting two children seven fivey years old. The New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce has decided to urge the Government to find an adequate amount for the expenses of sending a flax expei't to Great Britain and America. At Paeroa yesterday Marcus O'Dowell, charged with having in his possession 1544 cigars on which no duty had been paid, was fined £4o and £3 18s costs, or six months' imprisonment. The Foxton Telegreph tells a tale of how », Maori rushed into the water at Otaki the other day, and seizing a shark 9ft long succeeded, with the assistance of others, in landing him. Sir Joseph Abbott, Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, and Teece, of Sydney, left Auckland on a visit to the Thames goldfields yesterday. Thence they go to the lake country and the south. Captain Dunk, of Manawatu Mounted Rifles, was shot through the fleshy part of both thighs on Tuesday morning by a bullet which entered the mantlet at the target, supposed to be bullet proof. His injuries are not serious. Lord and Lady Brassey and suite arrived at Dunedin yesterday, and proceed to Lvttelton to-morrow. Lord Brassey states his intention of delivering an address on Australian Federation on arrival in Wellington. Mr W. E. Blvthe treated his employees in Napier and Hastings to a drive through the country yesterday. The party occupied three drags, and passed through the town at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, proceeding to Clive, where they had tea, and thence to Napier. Mr Mackay, of the Labour Department, returned to Palmerstoii on Friday (says the Standard) after bis visit of inspection to the Awarua and Taihape districts. As the result of Mr Mackay's visit he will recommend that a block of 3000 acres in the" Taihape district de set apart for the purpose of a State Farm. Mr G. Wilks, of Clare Lea Farm, Feilding, has patented a new insecticide for orchards, which has met with approval from experts. It is non-poisonous and easy of application, and there is no fear of harm to the trees. The Agricultural Department intends to report upon it shortly. Mr Wilks has been expeiimeuting for twelve years, and has "produced excellent results with his invention in his own orchard. Geake, the Victorian absconding solicitor. never forgot his professions of piety, and his voice was loudest in every psalm and most fervent in every prayer during the voyages from South America to London and back to Australia after his arrest. During his incarceration in Monte Video gaol Geake occupied the cell formerly accorded to -Jabez Balfour, the perpetrator of the great Liberator building Society frauds in London. Charters Towers goldfield, Queensland, produced 260,0000z of gold last year, and paid dividends to the amount of £252,042. being £12:3,04*2 in excess of the calls. Gympie gold returns for the year totalled 7*2,9;>90z, a decrease of 50G70z on 1895. The dividends amounted to £113,832, or £27,392 in excess of calls. In 1895 the calls were within £7OOO of the dividends. The quick despatch received by the S. S and A. Company's cargo steamer Pakeha in this colony just about constitutes a record in the way of handling cargo for New Zealand. The vessel was only on the coast sixteen days, during which time she discharged over 6000 tons of general merchandise, visited five ports, where she loaded a full cargo of wool, mutton and other New Zealand produce besides taking in sufficient coal to last on her Homeward voyage. A young man James Scott, an employee of Mr Mdlroy, met with an accident yesterday afternoon, and narrowly escaped serious injuries. Mr Scott was engaged in shoeing a young horse, which was lying on the ground, and not being used to the operation, it kicked violently, and in its struggles Scott received a kick on the head, which was at first thought to be very serious, but, fortunately, the consequences were not so bad as was suppose d, i>r Toswill attended to the wounds, and the sufferer is progressing as well as can be expected. At the Wellington Lower Court yesterday, Thomas Kelly, the licensee of the Princess Theatre llotel, Tory street, was charged with basing refused to admit Constable Cairns to 1 lis premises without unnecessary delay. The evidence of the police was to the effect that Kelly refused to allow Constables Cairns and Hole to enter when asked, and delayedt hem lit the door for sonic minutes. When tliev did go inside they met 10 men in the passage. For the defence it Was contended that the defendant merely wished to make sure that they were policemen before allow ing them to get into the hotel. Mr Wanlell dismissed the information, and, in doing so, said that the licensee had a right to satisfy himself that the constables were really policemen.—Times.
