BRITISH ADVANCE IN AFRICA

A force of 500 troops with Maxim guns will be despatched in February to occupy Benin, on the West Coast of Africa, and open up the interior country. Captains Boisragon and Locks, who have arrived at Brass, will be consulted as to the resources of the King of Benin. Mr R. Moore, Vice-Consul on the Niger Coast, is confident that a week's operations will destroy the power of the King. The cruisers Thesus and Forte, of the Channel squadron, have been despatched to West Africa in view of the trouble in the Niger Protectorate. Jan. 17. Lieutenant Hourst, leader of the French Niger expedition, has concluded a treaty with the King •of Madidu, which ensures France the passage of the Niger river and the exclusion of the British from Madidu's territory.
