TO-DAY'S TELEGRAMS.
[By TKLEUR.U'iI.j (/*<'/• I'irxx Association.) Wellington, This day. The Waiohine Bridge, near Greytown, caught lire just after a traction engine passed. It was considerably charred before the fire was extinguished. A heavy northerly gale is blowing to-day and rain is threatening. The spring and summer weather lias been a remcrkable contrast to the winter. The middle of the year for months is almost the windiest, but fairly wet; since the vernal equinox strong winds and dry weather has been the rule. Monday was the hottest day so far,' but nothing extraordinary. Great disappointment is felt at the Sydney Bands not coming over for.the contest which begins at the Exhibition to-night. Up to yesterday it was expected they would be present, but a cable has been received stating thyy had abandoned the idea. Timaru, This day. The heat yesterday exceeded any known for many years, 92 in perfect shade and 110 in verandahs and lee of buildings being recorded. Small fruits are being spoiled by baking on the bushes. To-day a strong N.W. gale is blowing. The heat and wind must do great damage to crops.
