Chess Tournament.
(<'/• f'rrsx Association.)
Christchurch, This day. In the second round of the chess championship, Hookham adopted Petroff's defence against Edwards and won. Parson is on his 18th move, but the game is fairly even, Mason defended against Barns with the French game and the positions are even. Cocks opened against Anderson with Ruy Lopez, and at the luncheon adjournment the former appeared to have a little the best of the position. Pleasants also adopted the same opening against Mellor, and an unsound sacrifice caused the latter to loose his position and he resigned on the 28th move. Gifford opened with the Scotch game against Meldrum, and even play resulted. - Grierson had a bye.
