Cabinet Jottings.

[By Telegraph.] (P<t P/w Association.) Wellington, This day. New regulations for the disposal of land under the Land for Settlement Act have been adopted and will shortly be gazetted. The Cabinet has decided that in future the maximum salaries of gaolers will be reduced, and that payments to governors and first class gaolers be £3OO instead of £4OO, and second class gaolers £250 instead of £3OO. The regulations are further amended that it is not imperative for gaoler's wives to be employed as matrons. The petitions for the release of Louis Chemis, convicted of Hawkin's murder in Wellington, and Miss Flannagan, infanticide, Christchurch, will be dealt with by the full Cabinet early in the new year. Applications having been made by some candidates for the return of the deposits lodged at the last election, Government has decide that they have no authority to do so. For the same reason Government regret being unable to comply with the request of the debenture-holders of the Midland Railway Company for an extension of time for the payment of moneys claimed as payment of work done by Government. The Rotorua Drainage Scheme proposed by Mr Hayes has been consdered by the Cabinet. The total cost of the scheme will be £9OOO. Subject to certain alterations a further expert's assistance will be invited before the scheme is finally adopted.
