The sport of yachting has become, in and around New York, very popular of late years ; but it takes a loug purse to indulge in it. A writer iu the Ladies' llome -Jonrnal gives some figures concerning it : •• Belonging to New York and its immediate neighborhood, there are *2.3 yacht clubs, and the membership in these is larger than in the merely social clubs which have been commented on is this artiels. Attached to these clubs, or rather belonging to the membrs thereof, there are somethings like two thousand yachts of various classes, ranging from the useful and easy-handled eatboat to the magnificent twin-screw steamer with triple-expansion engines. Now the property value of these yachts is about £4,000,000. while the owner of them expend on them each year quite that much in keeping them in commission. This goes to show that there is something besides ahorse capable of eating its head off. A yacht is a pleasuae boat, and yachts quite naturally cost according to size of vessel and crew, and the amount of entertatnment supplied by the master, while the duration of tbe time of commission is a most important factor. There are members of the New York Yacht Club who spend each season £'-3000 on their yachts, and earn for their hospitality fame for their generosity if not lavishness. There are othecs who keep their yachts in commission all the year round, and spend £20,000 annually. But taking the yachts small and large, they do not cost the owners more then £2OOO each per year.
