POLO PARS.
By Canuck.! The Ilawke's Hay Polo Clc.b op; ni ;1 their new ground on the Trotting Club's course at Stortford 1 last Saturday. The weather was shuwerv and the attendance small. Among the players were Messrs Cross,-. Chambers. Hill, H. l;c.--«:!. McKenzie, Smith, and some new hands. Three spells were played but the rou<di jim»« prevented any conspicuously fast uork. which was also negatived by the w. t grass. '1 i.e ground when the grass is eau n down will make the best ground the JI.U.I'.C. lane \et had. and we hope to see many a good galloping game upon it yet. The first and second of the H.Li.I'.C. will pl\\ a match with the first and second of the Wbareransri I'.C. in the last week in December. Probably at Hastings. The ponies played on Saturday were an average lot. Nothing very striking about tilt- majority of them. The play was poor. Messrs Chambers and < 'rossc being the only ones to put in an occasional run. The playing of First Whisper, a new hand at the gam.-, caused much amusement. and the acrobatic performance indulged in by her rider Mr 11. Kus-ell towards the end of the second spell drew forth the cheers toil 1". •\. - of his fellow players, "fhouch unable to keep his seat enn-e<|Ui-nt on tin- vagaries of the lllly. v. ho did not much relish the banking about she c -t. Mr Iviis-sel lin coining otfhung on wuo the tenacity of a bull dog. and eventually succeeded in landing oil his feet ; a much more dignified spill to say the least of it. than if he had housed on the broad i.f his back. The tilly First Whisper may be all right for racing, but she is far too tine for polo and would assuredly break down. Apart from this she is only a certificate holder, and by n >xt season may be disqualified for t!_- overweight. That raking littb- mare of" Mr Crosse's I'.utterlly " appears in gn at heart, and should place smother bracelet to Mrs collection before the reason is over. The "Whareransii P.C. ha ve issue d their programmes for a Gymkhana to be held on the Napier Park course on Saturday January 23rd. 1897. There are e:ght events on the programme including a Polo ( tip 4 furlongs and a Hurdle ll.tce 0 furlongs. Here's the chance for some local tlyers. TRAINING NOTES.
