A Raid oil Chinese.
A GAMBLING DEN SURPRISED. (i'er J'ress Association.) Auckland, This day. Last night a police force, consisting of five sergeants, four detectives and fifteen constables made a raid on a Chinese gambling house in Wakefield street, occupied by Chee Fong. They arrested the occupier and 25 other Chinamen. A warrant was taken out under the Gaming Lotteries Act. The police executed it by apprehending all on the premises. The Chinese were completely surprised, and a stampede ensued, but the police secured all, only one man making any resistance. The men were playing fan-tan. A quantity of Chinese cash, tokens, dice, and money was seized. The prisoners were all handcuffed and marched to the lock-up. The charge is that Chee Fong's house was used as a common gaming house ; the others will be charged with being found on the premises. The prisoners were brought up at the Police Court to-day. Most of those arrested are market gardeners.
