REV. MR HOBBS IN REPLY.
[To The Editor.] Sir, —With her consent, as expressed in your columns, I have obtained from you the name of the widow. Neither herself nor her husband were known to me. till the time of his death, the cireuni**o|pees surrounding which made my attendance at the funeral a matter of painful difficulty. She and her family are all Roman Catholics, and, I believe, wellknown to the philanthropic of that communion. Notwithstanding that she. has no claim whatever upon me, I enquired of those well able to judge as to whether I should assist her, and was strongly advised to the contrary. An application made on her behalf to the Charitable Aid Board was adversely reported upon by the police, and refused by the Board. I am thankful to the widow for allowing me to quote an instance of that careful discrimination for which people tell me I do not always get credit.—l am, Sec, J. HoBBS. The Vicarage, Hastings, December 1, 1896.
