Mrs Yates, ox-Mayor of Onehunga, was defeated by 133 votes to 65. At a test race in the Auckland Domain for selecting a cycling representative for the Wellington and Christcburch carnivals A. J. Campbell did 7 miles in 14 min 17 4-sth sec. He leaves on the 7th of December. The test was made under the auspices of the Auckland Cycling Club. The Taranaki Agricultural and Pastoral Show yesterday was very successful. Blood entries, Mr Wilson's Fraternite 1, Lebel 2 ; entire in training, Mr Teed's Pyroxylin 1 and champion ; brood mare, Mr Russell's Sellinger 1 and champion ; draught mare, Mr M'Lean's Nellie. Cattle and sheep were well represented. The exhibits of dairy produce and farming implements were also good. The annual show of the Nelson Agricultural Association was held yesterday in fine weather. In cattle Channel Islands and Ayrshires were good, but shorthorns were few in number. There was a grand show of sheep, the Romneys, Lincolns, Leicesters, and Shropshires, being extra good. Pigs were numerous, the Berkshires being excellent. In horses the hacks were a very line lot. Butter, cheesa, bacon, and other products were greatly admired, and machinery and implements were numerous, while the riding, driving, and hurdle competitions attracted great attention. Miss A. A. R. Ludford, a native of Wellington, who has contributed several poems to New Zealand papers, is among the winners in the prize competitions of The Golden Penny, published by the London Graphic. The young lady also received from the private secretary of the Queen an acknowledgement with thanks in reply to a letter congratulating Her Majesty on the 60th year of her reign. The Imperial volunteer officers' decoration has been issued to Captain Danes, of the Kurama Rifle Volunteers, for 20 years and 11 days' efficient service. Mr Duncan Sutherland has been elected Chairman of the Oamaru County Council. He has held the position for the last 16 or 17 years. Beautiful weather prevailed for the second day of the Dunedin Agricultural and Pastoral Society's show yesterday, and as a result there was a record attendance. There must have been fully 14,000 people present during the afternoon, and great interest -was taken in the parade of prize stock. In draught horses Mr Douglas with Wallace secured the championship for entries, and 'with Patrick's Pride of Kilsyth for mares. There was some good competition in the jumping events.
