The whole of the salvage from the recent fire besides the household furniture of a lady leaving Hastings will be sold without reserve. Mr A. L. D. Eraser addresses the electors of Hastings at the Princess Theatre to-night, when special accomodation will be provided for seating the ladies. At a special meeting of the Borough Council, held yesterday, on the motion of Mr Dennett, seconded by Mr Beecroft, Mr J. N. Williams was appointed to represent the Council on the Charitable Aid and Hospital Hoards. On the declaraticn of the poll yesterday evening. Mr Cecil Augustus Eitzßoy was re-elected to the office of Mayor for the ensuing vear. The official figures are : Fitzlioy" 277; Ellis, 82; Informal, 5. Mr l'itzlioy was therefore returned by a majority of 19.5, There was no excitement, and the figures caused little or no suprise.

Mr H. C. 0. Caulton was the object of a cowardly attack last night. It appears that three 2iien were on his premises in a half intoxicated condition, and at 11 o'clock Mr Caulton asked them to leave. They obeyed his request and he held the street door open for them to pass through, and the last man whilst passing swung his arm and struck Mr Caulton a severe blow 011 the face. The arrivals in the colony during October last numbered 1455, and the departures were 816. The figures for October last year were :—Arrivals, 1497 ; departures, 1063. The increase for last month by excess of arrivals over departures is 639, against 424 in October, 1895 —a very satisfactory result as to actual numbers and as a comparison. Canterbury takes the lead of the provincial districts in the felmongering, tanning, currying, and wool scouring industry, with 29 establishments, 690 hands, receiving J041,864 in wages; Otago follows with 28 establishments, 319 hands, and .£24,532 of wages ; Wellington comes next with 17 establishments, 212 hands, and £19.1 ±2 of wages ; Hawke's Bay has 16 establishments, 132 hands, and pays £10,133 in wages ; Auckland stands with 15 establishments, 223 hands, and £17,715 of wages. Wellington warehouse prices are in every instance charged by the D. I. C. when executing orders received by post. Those of our residents who want really nice fashionable goods need not hesitate about communicating with the D. I. C., Wellington. Complete furnishing is now a special feature of the D. I. Mr H. Yates Thompson, former proprietor of the Pall Mall Gazette, has handed over to the Corporation of Liverpool the handsome palm-house, which he recently erected in Sefton Park, at a cost of over .£IO,OOO. The palm house is a large octagonal structure of glass, resting upon a base of polished red granite brought from the Isle of Mull.

An extraordinary accident, which resuited fatally, took place the other day at a bottle works in Camlaehie, Glasgow. A labourer was leaning against a brick wall close to tile back of one of the furnaces, suddenly the furnace exploded, and the molten glass rushed out and surrounded the man. Strange to say. it did not touch him, but the heat was so intense that no one could get near him, and a hole had to be dug though the brick wall. 13y that time, however, he was burnt to a cinder and quite, unrecognisable. lie was 85 years of age.
