A curious dispute has occurred at Santa Marina, in Abruzzi. The priest of the village, named Palerme, received an order transferring him to another village, but he had made himself such a favorite with the ladies of his parish that they absolutely refused to allow him to leave the place. The mayor,at the head of the Carabineers, intervened, in order to force the women to release the priest, whom they had surrounded, but they held firmly to each other, and the soldiers had to charge them m order to get him away. One woman was killed on the spot by a gunshot, and se\ eral oihers were injured. Finally the priest was literaliy dragged from their midst and escorted by the Carabineers out of the village. It is understood (says the Lyttelton Times) that the Registrars of Electors in different parts of the colony are not agreed as to the definition of shearer in the Electoral Amendment Act. 1B9;J. Some are inclined to include all engaged in or about a woolshed who are temporarily absent from their district, another would issue electoral rights only to those who are described on the printed roll as "shearers," whilst a third reading is that shearers only means the nun actually engaged in cutting the wool of the. sheep, as the IW(> amending Act added " musterer," which would have been unnecessarv had the term shearer been inclusive. The Christehureh Registrar adopts the last reading. Some of the English papers are the reverso of the complimentary to New Zealand with reference to the passing of the Asiatics Exclusion Bill, One paper, after mentioning that, the Bill passed the Legislative Council by 11 votes against 2, goes on to say, " The two opponents who represent the small fraction of enlightment in that narrow provincial community, recorded their protest oil substantially indisputable grounds, but in that out-of-the-way colony, whose isolation restricts the views of its inhabitants and promotes selfish opinions, the voice of two crying in the wilderness is not likely to have much effect. That isolation (continues the uncomplimentary critic) explains why so modern a community reverts to the deas of the middle ages." Rudyard Kipling, when a newspaper man at Lahore, got scared through fancying he had a snake up his trousers leg. The story is told in M'Clure's Magazine by a writer who was Kipling's newspaper eelleague. The danger of snakes in Lahore was real enough, and the place was rich in scorpions. One afternoon, the two found 25 under the matting in the verandah outside the bedroom door, besides a few centipedes. 'lhey put the lot into a large tumbler and filled it up with whisky. One day, when we were dressing, I heard Kipling shouting, and went into his room. His face was pale with horror, and he was tightly clasping one leg above the knee. " There's a snake." he gasped, inside my trousers, and I think I've got him by the head. Put your hand up from below and pull him out." But before I had finished I saw the horror in his face relax, and give place to a puzzled look, succeeded by fits of laughter. Endeavoring to ascertain by the sense of touch whether it was the head he was grasping, he had discovered that it had a buckle. His braces had got down the leg of the trousers.
