Interprovincial News.

For the intercolonial band contest, which is to be held in connection with the Exhibition on the 80th and 31st December and Ist January, the following entries have been received : —■ Newtown Band, Sydney (which won the recent contest at Sydney) ; Parramatta Band (Sydney), Wellington Garrison, Nelson Garrison, Canterbury Engineers, Marton Royal, Woodville Brass Band, Napier Garrison, and Stanmore. The solo competitors number 36. Mrs Miller, wife of Mr T. T. Miller, manager of the Bank of Australasia at Hawera, and second eldest daughter of Ml- John Duthie,M.H.R., died at her father's residence at Wellington last night. At 10.40 a.m. yesterday a slight earthquake shock was experienced at Taupo but the direction was undiscernable. At 12.40, Te Mare, a steam hole on Tongariro, burst into violent eruption emitting an immense volume of steam and smoke rising to a great height. Travelling against the wind it presented a grand spectacle during which Ngaruahoe was in active eruption. It lasted about 35 minutes, and a beautifully fine day and a clear atmosphere gave an uninterrupted view. A cloud containing red ashes travelled in the direction of Atiamuri, aud it was seen there at 3 o'clock. Another eruption took place which is evidently continuing (4 o'clock) but the wind causes the smoke to obscure it. Ruapehu also appeared to be emitting a small column of steam. Te Mare was similarly active about four years ago.
