Mr James Stewart, C.E., who has been in London in connection with the proposal of a London syndicate to take over the rights to run electrical tramways in Auckland. returned via America yesterday by the Mariposa from Sail Francisco. He states the preliminary arrangements arc now completed for the institution of a tram service by electricity in this city, and the matter now rests with the company in London and their agents here (Mr R. R. Hunt and himself). News by mail from Samoa states that Mr 11. L. Skeen, formerly of Auckland, has been elected Municipal Magistrate of Apia in place of Mr Cooper, who is returning to Auckland. Mr Skeen was elected by a majority of one vote, his opponent being Mr Cairuthers. Alfred Rowe, a single man, aged 39, who is on bail to appear at the Supreme Court in Wellington oil the 15th instant, is missing. He was last seen oil horseback at the ford of the Ruamahanga river near Carterton, apparently making for his home. This was at dusk oil Sunday night. His horse was found riderless next morning near the same spot. The river is being dragged. The Wninirapa and East Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Show, which opened yesterday at Carterton, was the best yet held in the Wairarapa. The entries were 800 in excess of last year, and constitute a record for the district. The collection of horses was a particularly large one. the entries numbering 301. Sheep also constituted a strong class, 298 being entered. More agricultural implements were shown this year than in any previous year, over 320 being on the ground.
