MR. JOHN DUTHIE.
We sincerely regret tlmfc Mr John Duthie finds it necessary to retire from political life ; we regret it for the reason that sound, honest politicians are not plentiful] in New Zealand and a man of Mr Duthie's ability can he ill .spared. Whatever may be his faults, it enn he truly said that he has always had the courage to express his opinions, and in such a manner as to leave 110 mistake as to what were his convictions. In financial matters, his long training in commercial aflairs has stood him in good stead, and where money came under review he was always able to express a clear and intelligent opinion, llis oratory was never remarkable, but he possesses something else of infinite value, and that is common sense. We are sorry to see Mr Duthie retire, and can only hope that the Empire City will see fit to return a member worthy to step into Mr Duthie's shoes.
