FEDERATION.
Bki-kank, Oct. 20
Between the dignity of the Council and the lukewarmness of the Government, there appears a possible prospect of the Federal Enabling Bill being wrecked by Queensland standing out of the coming Convention. The only practical result of the week's bickering has been to intensify the deadlock and show that the .Ministry is not so enamoured of Federation as to be prepared to make any sacrifice for it.
Mr Tynee, the Minister in charge of the Bill, speaking to Mr Gregory's amendment to shelve the Bill, warned Councillors that if it was carried, it meant placing beyond all possiblity the representation of Queensland at and Federal meeting. Mr Buzacott alleged that undue inlliunce had been brought to bear to induce Councillors, including himself, to climb down.
The Premier (Sir Hugh Nel-on) replying to protests against the postponement of consideration of the Council's message, said there had been a good ileal of unnecessary heat in the matter and it would be better to allow time to calmly discuss it. There were much more important matters to be dealt with than wrangling with the Upper House.
The motion to postpone the matter was carried by to 21.
