NEW ZEALAND AND THE TOTALI SATOPv.
The last issue of the Review of Reviews contains the following:— ■' The New Zealand House of Representatives this session carried, on the voices, a Hill for the abolition of tofcalisators. The Bill has not yet become law, but the vote of the House in its favor shows that the public conscience grows uneasy on the whole subject of gambling. Omitting the trotting and galloway races, which are pure gambling performances, and taking the meetings of the orthodox racing clubs alone, it seems that in a single year New Zealand enjoyed three hundred days' racing, upon which 2156 races were run, the added money in excess of stakes amounted to £98,519, and the sum which passed through the totalisator reached £708,412. Now, New Zealand scarcely equals a London suburb in popution ; it is just emerging from a cycle of bad times, and yet its race bill for the year is of these stupendous dimensions. There is something in the history which predisposes them in the madness of inordinate gambling. If Great Britain had a racecourse and a totalisator on the scale of New Zealand, the spectacle would be the alarm, or the jest, of the civilised ■world. And all the Australian colonies are fermenting with the same passion for the fierce delights and easy gains of the turf. Sport, and the gambling bred of sport, threaten to tragically affect the Australasian character."
