EUROPEAN AND FOREIGN. London, Oct. 9. Prices remain firm at the wool sales, bat there is little competition. October 11. News from the East states that a hundred women and girls committed suicide in the Euphrates at Charphit to escape outrage. Mackintosh, a Victorian rifleman, won several valuable prizes at Spa and Servejo. Lady Scott and two men named Cocker tan and Kasthave have been arrested on a charge of libelling Earl Russell. Bail was allowed. "Wool is very linn. Lambs' good combings show light advance. " Ellerslie" brought 0-1. '• Glenorcby ,T crossbred 9-|d. Paris, Oct. 9. News has been received that Moorish pirates captured a French bartjue and fired on a Spanish steamer which was attempting to rescue her. The Czar has requested the President to thank the citizens for the hearty welcome extended him. Berlin, Oct. 9. The Cologne Gazette states that a defensive treaty exists between France and Russia, and has been the means of causing great excitement. Calcutta, Oct. 11. The outlook in India in consequence of the threatened famine is gloomy.
