NAPIER NOTES.

Napier, October 8. The Napier Garrison Band intends giving an al fresco concert at Hastings, on Sunday, when a collectionwill be taken up in aid of the band concert fund. The Scinde Cricket Club will open their season to-morrow with a match. Patron, Mr G. H. Swan ; vice-President, Mr AY. Blythe. The great bowling boom will also commence to-morrow on the Napier green, play commencing at 10.30 a.m. The local Free Association of Employers and "Workmen have filled 16 situations since their last meeting, and distributed a considerable quantity of money in giving relief to deserving cases. The annual meeting of the Napier Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last night, Mr T. AVatenvortli, superintendent presiding. The annual report showed that there had been fifteen fire musters during the year, the average attendance being twenty. The Brigade was called out on active duty twenty-four times, three being chimney fires, three grass fires, four false alarms, and fourteen for buildings, four of which were seriously damaged. The Brigade is in financial difficulties, having in hand £1 Os Id, and owing £44 8s 2d. It was stated that as the result of a conference between the Brigade and a committee appointed by the Borough Council, a new fire bell in Caryle street had been promised; also 1100 feet of new hose, and a hose cart. The election of officers resulted as follows: Superintendent, Mr T. "Waterworth; sub-superintendent, Mr J. G. Gilberd; first foreman, Mr W. Hartley ; second foreman, Mr "W. G. "White ; third foreman, Mr E. Brophy; secretary and treasurer, Mr AY. Gray; committee, Messrs AV, Hartley, J. Baaidell, AY. G. AAliite, and T. Scoble. I am sorry to say that the accident at the breakwater yesterday terminated fatally. The victim Charles McAnally died at the hospital last night at 8 o'clock. His skull was "completely crushed. The diceased was a married man and had only come from AYellington a fortnight ago. Ail inquest will be held to-day.
