[From Ocb Own Correspondent/ Napier, September 28. The bicyclists were dissappointed on Saturday as the rain spoiled the run into the country which they had arranged. A private wire on Saturday night conveyed the unwelcome intelligence that the Mar ton Mercury office had been burned down, and was not insuwl. '£he many friends in Hastings of Kirby. the proprietor and editor, will be very sorry to hear of his loss. A man named Ollivcr work in? at the C crane on the breakwater on Saturday received .somewhat severe injuries by being knocked down by a piece of timber in the slings. His ribs were badly bruised and a finger broken. There was a large and enthusiastic gathering of footballers at the Criterion Hotel on Saturday night, Mr Logan, Hie President of the Rugby Union, in the chair, when trophies were presented to the winning teams for the season just completed. The Pirates having won the championship received the Recreation Ground Company's shield, and the Clive Juniors were presented with the banner given by the Rugby Union for the winners of second teams .matches, whilst the West End Club, the winners of the third fifteen contests, were awarded a cup presented by Mr Ryan. Mr Duval advance-agent for Mr Pollard is on tour making arrangements for the appearance of the famed Opera Company to appear in Napier and Hastings during the carnival time. The rain spoiled the opening of the Camera Club's Exhibition on Saturday afternoon. The Hawkes' Bay exhibitors are :—Mrs Klingender, Miss Matthews, and Messrs Shanly, Hyde, Yon Haast, Bear, Owen, Groom, Bridges, Tosswill, Green, Humphries, Banner, Newton, Saunders, Beswick, Canning, the Rev. G. D. Cox, and Dr. Milne Thomson. There were also a number of choice pictures from other parts of the colony. The show was one of the most attractive displays of the sort "your own" has ever seen. The bulk of the pictures shown were the work of local photographers, but some, showing ideal workmanship, were also sent out from England, and were hung for the purpose of showing to what perfection the art has attained. Wellington, Nelson, and Dunedin artists also furnished some gems which should spur the local talent on to emulation.
