NAPIER NOTES.

[From Our Own Correspondent.]

Napier, September 19

A half-caste named Sam Jones, well-known at the Port and for some time a resident there, was arrested at Coromandel yesterday, charged with failing to make provision for the maintenance of an illegitimate child. A gentleman named Wood who had been living on the " gains " of an unfortunate lady friend was yesterday sentenced to a month's imprisonment for vagrancy by Dr. Caro, J.P. The hospital was benefited to the extent of over £l6 by the Garrison band's concert on the breakwater last Sunday. The sum of £8 was collected, and the Government subsidy will of course make up the remainder. Dr. Menzies, senr. . has been reappointed superintendent of the Refuge by the Charitable Aid Board, and consulting surgeon at the hospital by the Hospital Board. The Hawke's Bay Camera Club is going to hold another exhibition shortly, and the date will no doubt be advertised in Hastings. In Chambers yesterday the Chief Justice stayed execution in the case of West v. Dobbel on the condition that West paid the costs in instalments; £25 cash, half the amount of taxed costs in three months, and the balance in six months.

Very little business was done by the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday. The latter body decided to protest against being charged with the maintenance of three children named Hansen sent from Woodville to the Burnham industrial institution, and to grant relief in a large number of necessitous cases. There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the United Cricket Club last evening. Nine new members were elected, and the prospect of a successful season was expressed. The nineteenth anniversary of the Napier Working Men's Club was celebrated last night by a social in the concert hall. There was a very large attendance, and an enjoyable time was spent. The resignation of senior nurse Edwards has been accepted with regret by the Napier Hospital Committee. The Chief Justice gave judgment at some length yesterday morning in the case of Johnstone and wife v. Spratt. The claim of the plaintiffs was for probate in the will of Mrs Spratt entitling Mrs Johnstone to a half share in the deceased's property. The claim was opposed by George Spratt who holds a wife's interest in the other half. His Honor held that the will was valid, and gave judgment for the plaintiff, each party to pay their own costs. Later. Some bad characters are visitipg the town and several places were burglariously entered last night. B. Cleaver's premises, in Main-street, were burglariously entered and £l2 5s stolen. The burglar cut §. hole in the door and removed the iron bar which secured it. No arrest has been made. Leonard Ashby has been committed for trial on the charge of administering a noxious drug to Susannah Beck for illegal purposes. Mrs Beck, wife of a farmer at Wairoa, died after giving premature birth to a child while under Ashby'g treatment, .
