THE MILDURA SETTLEMENT.
FINDING OF THE COMMISSION
CHAFFEYS MAKE FALSE RE PRESENTATIONS.
Melbourne, This day,
The report of the MiMura Commission states that grave errors were made in laying out the settlement and making provision for the supply of water. Belief is expressed that Chaffey Bros, initiated the scheme without capital, though at the time assurance was given that they were men of large means. The Commissioners find that irregular channels were hastily and imperfectly constructed, whereby 50 per cent of water was lost through soakage. No state of supervision appears to have been exercised, notwithstanding that it was extensively advertised that the Government was practically at the back of Chaffeys. The report states that from what was known of the finances three years ago it is evident that the Government should have revoked the ig eement for non-compliance with t e condition, and have resumed control of the unsold land.
The Commissioners suggest, on the ground of policy, that the State should assist the settlement by a fairly liberal treatment of the settlers.
