LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Columbia Skating Rink will be open this evening. Tenders close to-day for filling in sections 210 and 211, Block 11., South Hastings. A quantity of reading matter, including last Australian items, appears on our fourth page. It is said that another Liberal candidate for the Hawke's Bay seat will be announced in a day or two. The Native Land Court was occupied this morning with the Ivarangata case, which involves a dispute over seven acres at the Bridge Pah. The Hastings Brass Band are making arrangements for a big concert to be held on October 21st, on which date the art uiiion will be drawn. Mr W. J. Tyerman advertitises a codlinmoth specific in Armstrong's Pyralicide, by which means the pest may be completely eradicated. This should prove of inestimable value to our orcliardists. Although the nominations for the principal events at the coming meeting of the H. B. Jockey Club are not large, with the exception of the Hurdle Bace the q\mlity of the horses is quite up to the average. lolanthe rehearsal last evening showed that both principals and chorus are almost perfect, and it is safe to predict that on the 29th inst. Hastings will have the pleasure of witnessing one of the finest amateur productions ever staged in Hawke's Bay.
It is understood that the meeting of the local Debating Society and the Napier Junior Club to discuss the subject of Prohibition will be arranged for St. Matthew's Hall, Hastings, and that a small charge for admission will be made on behalf of a deserving charity. Mr J. Neilson, watchmaker and jeweller, of Emerson street, Napier, advertises elsewhere that he has a splendid assortment of watches, clocks and jewellery to select from. As Mr Neilson is a thoroughly practical* man, customers may rely on getting their repairs done in a workmanlike manner and at the lowest remunerative prices. The Education Board appear to have done nothing with the application of the Hastings Committee for increased accommodation. It is idle to delay the question any longer, as the overcrowding is positively dangerous to the health of both teachers and children, besides having the effect of retarding studies. Unless something is done immediately a serious sickness may break out. The members of the Band of Hope Lodge have arranged an excellent programme for their meeting to-night at St. Matthew's HalL It will include songs, recitations, instrumental solos and selections, fawes dialogue , &c? Refreshments will be provided The Spit Drum and Fife Band have promised to attend- As the price of admission is only sixpence, and as the entertainments under the auspices of this lodge are always enjoyable a very large attendance is aoticipated.
The tug Duco made an unsuccessful search of Cook Straits for the derelict reported off the Brothers yesterday. The Kumeroa public hall has been burned down. It is insured for JEIOO in the Phoenix, but nothing on the library or contents. One of the principal speakers at the farewell given to his Excellency the Governor by the Maoris at Wellington on Monday was Mr Henry Tomoano. To-morrow at 2 p.m., Mr W. T. Dennett sells at his auction mart, by order of the Kegistrar of the Suprjeme Court, one 6 h.p. portable steam engine, one straw elevator, complete, and one Maynard chaff-cutter with driving belt complete. Mr Tom Waterworth, jun., of the wellknown monumental works, Karamu road, has a business announcement elsewhere. His work is well known throughout the whole district, and is second to none in the whole colony. Over 30 prohibition orders are in force in Invercargill. An Association footballer in Auckland had his nose broken on Saturday last. The Feilding Star says there were about 150 spielers at the Marton races last week. A prohibited person was charged at Eketahuna on Friday with being drunk. He was fined 20s. The Attorney-General in South Australia considers their law insufficient to protect clients against solicitors. Mr G. Hutchison, member for Patea, recently stated in the House, that in the district he had the honor to represent there was more slieep-stealing than in any other constituency in the colony. Last season 125,449 gallons of milk, for which 3d per gallon was paid, were received at the Bruce Dairy Factory. Out of this 131,1761b of cheese was manufacured, which was sold for £2056. The Norsewood Co-operative Dairy ' Factory Company's factory, which will be fitted up with the most modern appliances will be capable of receiving 1000 gallons of milk daily, and will be'ready for work at the end of October. Mr O'Regan says it is to be deeply deplored that the people of New Zealand —some 750,000 in all, of whom only 200,000 are producers—should be called upon to carry a burden of upwards of a million and a half in Customs taxation. The honor of having made the first pound of butter in Taranaki is said to belong to Mrs L. Oliver, who made the butter from milk from a cow brought over from Sydney by Captain King. The price of butter in those days was 3s 6d per pound. The police are continuing their investigations concerning the double murder at Petone, but so far have not discovered any more satisfactory evidence as to the perpetrator of the crime. Altogether, the mystery of the tragedy seems as great as ever. —N. Z. Times.
Some Melbourne "society " ladies who think nothing of paying £2O or so for a dinner, lately engaged a woman to work at Is per day for three days. She walked from lier lodgings at Fitzroy to Malvern —about four miles —only to be told that the engagement off as "visitors had arrived and it would inconvenience them to have her there.'' At Denehy Plains, New South Wales, Mr John Ferguson has running in his paddocks a curiosity in the shape of a three-legged bullock, the animal having been calved minus one of the forelegs and the corresponding shoulder. It has grown to the ordinary size, and when feeding puts the only foreleg it has got well up in front, using it as a sort of prop. It is difficult for the average stay-at-home to associate cold with South Africa. One reads, however, in the Cape Times that " at Britstown andPrieskathe season has been so cold that over 1000 ostriches, 10,000 sheep and 500 head of cattle and horses have perished. To add to the troubles of the farmers millions of springbucks have made their appearance, and not only devoured the veld that was left, but driven away the wild ostriches. Altogether, it is stated that the destruction of farmers' property in these districts is exceptionally disastrous even in these disastrous times." The late Benjamin Harboard, one of the old identities of the Tuapeka district, who died in Dunedin hospital on Saturday, bequeathed JE2S to the funds of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
