Derby on Saturday, was spoken of by the Bulletin thus : —Carbine's son, Charge ran a really big race in the Hampben Stakes. Last in the straight, he came through his horses in great style, and Hopscotch just struggled home in front of him with a neck to the good. Coil, who finished third hadn't the " go " of Charge, and, despite the difference in weights, the Carbine colt may prove the better on Derby Day. So many sports in Hastings looked to Tire bringing the A.J.C. blue ribbon to Mr S. H. Gollan that when the announcement was made on Saturday night that the sou of Medallion and Florence McCarthy had won there was general rejoicing. By some means or other the news was mutilated, and when a Inter cable told of the victory of Chwrge—a son of Carbine—there were a number of remarks made as to the hoax. The news was, howevers, published as it was received. The report that Tire had won the event was received in Wellington and accepted as a fact until a late cable contradicted it.
