He Lost His Ears.
A HORRIBLE CRIME
[By Telegraph] [Special to Standard.] Pahiatua, Sept. 10. Last night a man named Tim ■ O'Gorman was robbed of a valuable gold watch and had both his ears sliced off close to his head. Joseph Kenny, licensee of the Empire Hotel here, has been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the outrage. A short time ago Kennjix was made to disgorge a big chaqu6 alleged to be spent in his hotel by O'Gorman while drunk. This day. Further particulars of the O'Gorman affair are to hand. The man was drinking at Pahiatua on Wednesday afternoon, and was returning to his home at Mangatainoko, two miles distant, when he was waylaid and the greater part of his ears lopped off. He found his way to the house and was discovered there by his mate yesterday morning covered with blood and helpless. Kennedy, the man arrested on sus-" picion, was brought up at the local bench this morning, and was defended by Mr Tosswill. The police applied for a remand for eight days and objected strongly to bail being allowed. The Bench granted the remand but allowed bail. The police are very reticent. O'Gorman was unable to appear in Court.
