THE LOTTERIES BILL.
"TATTERSALLS" NOT TO BE INTERFERED WITH. llobart, This day. The Premier proposed as an amendment to the Lotteries Bill, that in all transactions on lotteries for personal gain the books and papers in connection therewith should be subject to inspection by an officer appointed by the Governor-in-C'ouncil; that lotteries should be subject to a license-fee; and that no tickets be sold to persons under the age of 21. The amendments were negatived by 0 to 14. An amendment that nothing in the Act should apply to lotteries authorised bv any previous Act and conducted solely by postal correspondence was adopted. A clause exempting lotteries for works of art or pure charity or philanthropy, but subject to the approval of the Attorney-General, was carried by the casting vote of the chairman.
